The Villages, Fla. – Alvon Isaac and Q'Zorian Kennedy each scored a touchdown and Patrick Harding threw for a pair of scores as the Gold enjoyed a 24-6 victory over the Green in the Green & Gold Game at The H.G. Morse Range.
The annual intrasquad scrimmage split The Villages High School football team into a pair of squads, with the respective teams selected by the Buffalo coaching staff. The scrimmage was played with two 25-minute halves featuring no clock stoppages, live kicks or point-after tries. The event also featured a pregame barbecue meal and autograph session with members of the Buffalo varsity team.
The two teams dueled to a 6-6 tie at the intermission, with playmakers Isaac and Kennedy putting up points in dazzling fashion to bring a full home-side grandstand to its feet twice in the early going.
After a Green fumble on the first possession of the scrimmage, the Gold ran 10 plays to jump out to a 6-0 lead, with Kennedy showing great concentration by hauling in a deflected pass from Harding for a 4-yard touchdown reception.
The Green responded with an eight-play, 75-yard march of its own, capped by a 25-yard touchdown run by Isaac. Lined up in the tailback position, Isaac took a toss to the right and then cut diagonally across the field to his left, weaving between multiple Gold defenders for a 6-6 halftime tie.
The second half belonged to the Gold squad, who scored on all three possessions in the final 25-minute period of play to run away with springtime bragging rights.
The Gold opened the second half with a trick play, as Kennedy pre-snap motioned across the formation to receive a handoff, before turning to throw a pass back into the hands of Cliff Bridges. The receiver sprinted ahead toward green grass – bypassing most of a stunned Green defense – rumbling ahead for a 56-yard gain.
Just two plays later, Harding waited for Bradee Powell to leak out on a corner route, with the quarterback standing tall to deliver an 18-yard touchdown pass to give the Gold squad a 12-6 lead.
The Gold finished off the scrimmage with two more touchdowns over the final nine minutes of action, as Lucas Watson connected with Aaron Restor on a 46-yard catch-and-run and Brady Hunt added a 24-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep to close out the intrasquad event.
Isaac rushed four times for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Kennedy hauled in three catches for 44 yards and a score. Harding completed 6-of-7 passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
In earlier action, the 6th/7th grade Green & Gold Game ended in a 6-6 tie, while the Green squad edged the Gold for an 8-6 win in the 7th/8th grade edition of the annual event.
