Weekly Roundup: Swim & Dive, Golf Enjoy Season-Opening Wins

First week of fall athletics sees VHS rack up multiple victories.

Middleton, Fla. — Athletic programs from The Villages High School enjoyed a successful first week of fall sports in Middleton.

Here's a look at what took place during a busy opening week of the fall sports calendar for the Buffalo:

VOLLEYBALL: The Villages High School volleyball team went 2-1 during the opening week of the season, protecting its home court with a pair of victories on Monday and Tuesday inside the VHS Gymnasium. The Buffalo opened with matching sweeps, earning 3-0 victories over Timber Creek and Belleview, respectively. VHS ultimately fell, 3-1, on the road at Lake Brantley on Wednesday night in Orlando. The team returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 on the road at Forest in Ocala.

SWIMMING & DIVING: The Villages High School swimming and diving team got its 20th anniversary season off to a strong start — and made history in the process — on Thursday at the VHS Aquatics Center. The Buffalo swept its season opener with Leesburg, as the boys rolled to a 131-38 win and the girls enjoyed a 128-24 victory. Ally Kline and Sebastian Price became the first two divers in program history as they leapt off the board to open the meet, while the trio of Ava Ehinger, Cooper Gardner and Zion Lumpay each won two events apiece. The squads are slated to return to action at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at home against Belleview.

BOYS GOLF: The Villages High School boys golf team made some history of its own on Tuesday in Middleton. The Buffalo took to Shallow Creek Championship Golf Course for the first time competitively and dominated, rolling to a 147-155 victory over Forest (Ocala). The 147 strokes as a team are the lowest in a nine-hole match in school history. Landon Howell shot a 35 to lead the way, while Braxton Williams (36), Grady Logan (37) and Rhett Kirkland (39) all combined to become the first VHS foursome to collectively shoot in the 30's. The team returns to action at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 when it hosts Lake Minneola.

BOWLING: The Villages High School bowling teams each got to enjoy victories during the first week of the season at AMF Leesburg Lanes in Leesburg. The Buffalo girls currently sit 2-0 overall, opening with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Leesburg and Umatilla on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The VHS boys squad dropped its season opener on Wednesday against Leesburg by a final of 3-0, before rallying on Thursday afternoon for a 3-0 victory of its own over Umatilla. The squads are scheduled to return to the lanes at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 27 against East Ridge in Clermont.
