Middleton, Fla. — The Villages High School girls soccer team started its season with a deluge of goals, downing North Marion (Citra) 10-0 in its season opener Wednesday night at The Range at H.G. Morse Stadium.

Senior Kianna Burgos and freshman Violet Dougherty each recorded four-goal hauls to power the Buffalo offense, which ensured the game ended by halftime, via the FHSAA's mercy rule.

Freshman Samaya Khaleel opened the scoring for The Villages (1-0) in the first minute, knifing through the North Marion (0-1) defense after a turnover deep in the Colts' half, putting the Buffalo ahead from the jump. Then, both Burgos and Dougherty scored in the sixth minute to quickly put VHS ahead 3-0.

In the 11th minute, Ana Porras received a pass from Dougherty and spun off her defender to tuck the Buffalo's fourth inside the left post. Burgos scored in each the 15th and 23rd, respectively, with Dougherty's second in between.

The freshman Dougherty was the first to reach her fourth, with back-to-back tallies in the 31st and 33rd minutes, and Burgos capped off the rout with a drive through the middle to a one-on-one with NMHS keeper Leyla Guillen to complete her haul.

The loss extends North Marion's losing streak to 16, a run that dates back to Feb. 1, 2023, when it lost to VHS in the Class 4A-District 5 Tournament. Meanwhile, the Buffalo begin the season in the win column and will host Trinity Catholic (Ocala) at 6 p.m. Friday night in Middleton.
