Middleton, Fla. — The Villages High School baseball and softball teams anxiously await their postseason fate.
Both the Buffalo baseball and softball teams are seeking at-large bids into their respective state playoff fields, as each fell short of capturing a district championship and the automatic postseason bid that comes with it earlier this week.
The VHS baseball team saw its destiny taken out of its own hands with a 13-3 loss in six innings to North Marion (Citra) on Thursday night in Middleton, as the Buffalo suffered their worst loss of the spring in the Class 4A-District 5 championship game.
The Buffalo softball team bowed out of the Class 3A-District 6 Tournament semifinals with a 7-6 loss in eight innings on Tuesday night in Crystal River, marking the sixth one-run loss of the season for VHS.
Each region within the FHSAA state playoffs features eight teams — four district champions and four at-large teams — determined by the state's playoff ranking system.
As of the latest rankings, the Buffalo baseball team held the No. 3 position in Class 4A-Region 2, while the VHS softball team held the eighth and final spot in the Class 3A-Region 2 rankings.
The FHSAA is scheduled to release the playoff brackets at 10 a.m. (softball) and 10:30 a.m. (baseball) on Saturday.
