Buffalo Fall to Tavares

VHS can't find the end zone in 22-0 home loss to visiting Tavares.

Middleton, Fla. — The Villages High School football team learned a lesson in the collective importance of the sport's three phases Friday night in Middleton.

VHS played solid defense and superb special teams against visiting Tavares, but a lack of offensive production led to a 22-0 shutout loss at The Range at H.G. Morse Stadium.

The Villages (3-2 overall) was held to a season-low 78 yards — rushing for just two yards — and was kept off the scoreboard for the second time this fall, as a pair of turnovers and one momentum-swinging play in the second half doomed the Buffalo.

"I thought our defense played lights out and our special teams was strong, but we just didn't get it done on offense tonight," said VHS head coach Richard Pettus. "We've got to be better on offense — there's no excuses — we're back to work and back to the drawing board there."

The Buffalo defense and special teams pulled their respective weights for most of the night, with the VHS defensive unit holding Tavares (3-1) — who averaged 34.3 points per game — to just 14 points until surrendering a long touchdown run with just over a minute to play. The Villages also blocked two punts and twice booted 50-yard-plus punts of its own, but it was all for naught in a disappointing defeat.

Tavares opened the night with a methodical 10-play, 62-yard drive, with the first possession ending in a 1-yard touchdown run by Tyler Davis to give the visitors a 7-0 early lead.

The Buffalo offense couldn't capitalize on the team's first blocked punt of the night, which came by way of Reece Dennis with 1:20 to play in the first quarter. Dennis later left the contest in the third quarter with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 14-0 at halftime on a fourth-down touchdown run by Davis from 38 yards, who eventually finished with 15 attempts for 87 yards and a pair of first-half scores. VHS ran just 13 plays for 22 yards of offense in the first half.

A turning point in the contest came near the halfway mark of the third quarter, when VHS took over at the Tavares 43-yard line and appeared to halve its deficit with just one play. Ja'dence Kennedy dropped back to pass and heaved a deep pass down the sideline to Omari Hill, who hauled in the reception and then extended his arms for the goal line, only to lose possession of the ball — resulting in a touchback for Tavares.

"It took the wind out of our sails, for sure," Pettus said of the potential touchdown turned touchback. "We talk about stuff like that all the time. Adversity is going to hit, momentum is going to swing, and you have to find to find a way through it. We weren't able to do that tonight."

The Buffalo blocked their second punt of the night — this one deflected by Jeremiah Wimes — with less than five minutes to play in the game, giving VHS excellent field position at the Tavares 25. That opportunity was also squandered, as the Buffalo turned the. ball over on downs after failing to find the end zone on seven plays from inside the 10-yard line.

Tavares finally made VHS pay for not making the most of its chances, sealing the victory on an 85-yard touchdown run by Izayia Williams with 1:13 remaining for the night's final margin after a two-point conversion.

Maleek Williams finished with 25 yards on 11 carries for VHS, while Kennedy completed 8-of-20 passes for 76 yards and an interception. The Buffalo were 1-of-10 on third down in the loss.

The Villages will now turn its attention to Belleview (0-4) next Friday, as the Buffalo host the Rattlers on Homecoming Night with a 7 p.m. kickoff scheduled in Middleton.

"We've got to take this and learn from it," Pettus said. "That's all you can do."
