VHS Held Hitless in Home Loss

Buffalo stymied by Bishop Moore in 8-0 home loss on Wednesday night.

Middleton, Fla. — The Villages High School baseball team was held without a hit Wednesday night en route to an 8-0 home loss to Bishop Moore (Orlando) in Middleton.

The Buffalo (3-3 overall) put eight runners on base but couldn't generate a hit in the rematch of a Class 4A regional semifinal from a year ago, as the visiting Hornets (5-0) also took advantage of three VHS errors in the field and seven walks at the plate to remain unbeaten this spring.

"It's frustrating, but this is why we play teams like this," said VHS head coach Alex Menendez. "Just like how last year ended up, we went down there and played (Bishop Moore) in the regular season and then played them again in the playoffs. We're fully expected to bounce back tomorrow and come back, and potentially see them in a month and a half from now."

The Villages was kept off balance at the plate by Bishop Moore senior — and Florida Southern commit — Andrew Furey, who led a trio of pitchers to the no-hit performance. Along with sophomore Layton Hall and junior Jason Forgey, the Bishop Moore arms allowed VHS runners to reach on five walks, two errors and a fielder's choice.

"Wer just need to be a little more eyes-on-ball, in terms of just what's a strike and what's a ball," Menendez said. "Obviously, we're continuing to see good pitching and it's just a matter of trusting your eyes and trusting your hands."

Bishop Moore was aided offensively by a two-run home run — the first in VHS Baseball Stadium history — from Kort McLean in the first inning, while Xavier Perry slapped a two-run single in the fourth.

VHS will close out a three-game, three-day swing at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night, when the Buffalo host Lake Minneola in Middleton.
