Middleton, Fla. — The Villages High School wrestling team sent out its five seniors with a lopsided victory Thursday night in Middleton.
The Buffalo rolled past visiting Lecanto, 58-16, on the strength of eight pinfalls and a major decision to pick up the Senior Night win inside the Buffalo Sports Complex.
"When we got into the top position, we really dominated and closed the door on some matches tonight," said VHS head coach Joe Cummings. "We saw some guys open up a little more on our feet and take charge with some physicality. I thought we were pretty aggressive and pushing the pace most of the night, which is always good to see."
Prior to the dual, the Buffalo honored Aaron Spratt, Jonathan Overstreet, Brock Merrill, Jesse Nelson and Jonathan Clohecy for their time spent in a VHS singlet, with four of those seniors recording falls in their final home dual.
Spratt opened the night with a first-period fall at 106 pounds over Cody Brewer, before Overstreet followed with a first-period fall at 132 pounds over Jude Samons. At 165 pounds, Nelson also needed just one period to dispatch Jayce Reeves via fall.
At 175 pounds, Clohecy remained unbeaten and proved his No. 1 state ranking once again, needing less than a minute to pin Miles Worlton to improve to 42-0 overall this season.
"The analogy I've used when talking about him is, 'High tides raise all ships," Cummings said of Clohecy. "It's been great to have him in our room and be a leader for some of our younger guys. He's been great for our program because he works really hard, and he sets the tone for everything we do."
The Buffalo also received pins from DJ Dunn, Wyatt Overstreet, Noah Armstrong and Ethan Caudill in the win. David Mooney also earned a 10-2 major decision over Joey Kemp at 157 pounds.
VHS has just one regular-season event left on its schedule, as the Buffalo will host the T.D. Talbott/American Legion Duals starting at 10 a.m. on Feb. 15 inside the Buffalo Sports Complex.
