Middleton, Fla. – The Villages High School boys basketball team used a spirited second-quarter effort to run toward an eighth straight district championship Saturday in Middleton.
The Buffalo routed their old rival South Sumter for a 79-44 victory in the Class 3A-District 5 Tournament championship game, capitalizing on a momentous second quarter that paved the way for VHS (20-7 overall) to continue its run of district dominance.
Aaron Britt, Jr. scored 21 points and registered five assists,
Jomar Bernard tallied 12 points and
Ethan Bevis had 10 points and five rebounds to lead the way for the Buffalo, who now await the announcement of the state's postseason field on Sunday. VHS will host a regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 in Middleton.
The Buffalo recorded 23 assists on 27 made shots from the floor in the win, while also forcing South Sumter (15-11) into 35 turnovers on the night. VHS was particularly aggressive in the second quarter, using its defense-to-offense transition game to the tune of a 32-9 advantage in the period.
The duo of
Kymani Weathers (9 points, 4 blocks) and
Herly Brutus (8 points, 6 rebounds) also made things difficult for the Raiders, who lost their 17th straight game to the Buffalo dating back to 2016.
