Middleton, Fla. – The Villages High School softball team advanced to the Class 3A-District 7 Tournament championship with a convincing win Monday in Middleton.
The Buffalo used a pair of four-run innings to move past Mount Dora in a semifinal matchup, winning 8-2 in front of a hearty crowd at the VHS Softball Stadium.
Lexy Dunn collected three hits – including the 100th of her career in a Buffalo uniform – and drove in four runs to lead The Villages (16-9), who scored four runs each in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
Emily Thompson was dominant on the mound against the Hurricanes (11-13) for the second time this season, striking out eight and allowing just two hits over four scoreless innings of work. Thompson, who also had two hits on the night, fired seven shutout innings against Mount Dora back on March 4.
Zoey Schutt also had two hits for the Buffalo, who now turn their attention to top-seeded Eustis in the district title game on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Eustis.
